City of Cumming Jump Starts its Vibrancy Project with a Win!

City of Cumming GA located in Forsyth County GeorgiaOn April 20, 2018 the City of Cumming kicked off its new Fridays at the Fairgrounds event which is meant to draw citizens from around the county into the downtown area on the 3rd Friday of each month during the warm weather months (5 p.m. to 10 p.m.)
With a variety of food from dozens of vendors and food trucks, live music and dancing, hot air balloon rides and a giant cruise-in car show, the inaugural event – held at the Cumming Fairgrounds – was a major success drawing in over 4,000 visitors.
As part of the Cumming City Council’s planned “vibrancy project”, with the long-term goal of creating more of the “downtown city atmosphere” you find in the nearby cities of Suwanee or Milton, I think that this event will serve as an excellent launch pad for future events.
See more photos from Fridays at the Fairgrounds on the City’s Facebook page (facebook.com/cummingcityhall/).
In addition to Fridays at the Fairgrounds, the Cumming City Council has initiated Food Truck Fridays which will be held on the 1st Friday of each month (5 p.m. to 9 p.m.) with a plan to offer three entrée trucks and a dessert truck.
It is obvious that the Cumming City Council has heard the voices of the community in regard to its desire to have a vibrant “city center” similar to those in surrounding areas and is taking steps to create that venue!

Cumming GA – Newest Purple Heart City Recipient

Purple heart medal military awardLast week, the city of Cumming, GA proudly became a city stop on the Purple Heart trail.

The honorary designation was received from Joe LaBranche of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and the Cumming City Council voted unanimously to approve the proclamation.

Purple Heart medals are given only to soldiers who were wounded or killed in combat and is the oldest known US military decoration still in use. Originally called the Badge of Merit, the award was established by George Washington in 1782.

The city of Cumming, and of course Forsyth County as a whole, appreciates and honors its active military families and veterans. I believe that this designation stresses the importance of this to all.

While speaking to the council Mr. LaBranche said, “At one time I believe just about everybody in the United States knew a Purple Heart recipient, but many of our young are oblivious to its meaning. This proclamation may help them learn the meaning of the Purple Heart.”

Freedom is not free!   So, I hope that Mr. LaBranche is correct and that the awarded designation serves to bring attention to an honor which is often times forgotten.

Ruling to Keep Forsyth County GA Beautiful

Forsyth County GA - save trees and stop billboards and developer clear cuttingOkay, I admit it…. I’m a bit of a tree hugger.

When I first moved to Georgia in 1989 (from my beloved, but virtually treeless, Texas) one of the things I loved most about the area were the roadsides filled with trees.  I enjoyed being surrounded by greenery as I went about my daily tasks – even on the main highways.

Unfortunately, over time, HWY-285 and HWY-75 were expanded and the trees were removed leaving the devastated roadsides littered with billboards (what I call “litter on a stick”).

I prayed that GA-400 would never face the same fate, but about two years ago a huge section of trees were removed between exits 12 and 13 to make way for three huge, ugly billboards and my heart just broke.  With all of the new construction underway in our area, trees are being sacrificed on a daily basis, but this was just too much!

I was so thankful when I heard that a ruling had been made that the company and landowner responsible for this are being forced to replace at least a portion of the trees.  Will they be the beautiful, mature trees that were removed?  Of course not! But I do hope that it’s enough to keep other companies and landowners from trying to skirt the rules just to line their own pockets.

Now, if we can just put a stop to developer clear cutting….

Cumming Named Among Georgia’s Top 10 Best Cities To Start A Business

Cumming GA newspaperAccording to James McCoy, president and CEO of the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce, Cumming has been named as one of Georgia’s top 10 best cities to start a business.

He reported during the city’s June 16 Council meeting that “Some of Georgia’s biggest cities – Atlanta, Columbus, Augusta and Savannah – have the largest number of businesses in the state, but the most profitable businesses are in the suburbs and smaller cities,” citing a recent report published by personal financial website NerdWallet.com.

According to NerdWallet.com’s website, the organization helps consumers make decisions about education, finance, health, investing and shopping. The website features online tools that provide research and experts “to help consumers take back control of their choices in a marketing-driven, trillion-dollar industry.”

During his comments, McCoy noted that Cumming is listed as the 6th best place to start a business and that the top 10 Georgia cities in the report share several similarities.

“Six cities in the top 10, each with a population under 60,000, boast higher average revenue per business than the state’s most populous cities,” the report states. “All of the top 10 cities are along major transportation routes, which is a plus for businesses shipping products around the region or country. Proximity to Atlanta doesn’t hurt either.”

As locals already know, the report states that location is one of Cumming’s strengths, as is the city’s high number of already-established businesses.

“Cumming is one of the smallest cities on this list, but it has more businesses per 100 people than any place in this study,” the report says. “In fact, Cumming has almost as many businesses (5,251) as it does residents (5,504). Located along the bustling Georgia 400 corridor, businesses in Cumming benefit from the area’s transportation and technology infrastructure.

Also highlighted in the report is the fact that the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business Services Center offers several programs, such as coaching and roundtable discussions, to help local business owners start and grow their companies.

Other cities, listed in order of their rank, include, Alpharetta at No. 1, followed by Doraville, Vinings, Garden City and Cumming. Those ranked 7 through 10 are Norcross, Jesup, Carrollton and Waycross.

CONGRATULATIONS CUMMING BUSINESS LEADERS on a job well done!

Forsyth County is a northern suburb of Metro-Atlanta, conveniently located between the waters of Lake Lanier and the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, which provides homeowners with an enticing combination of both rural charm and upscale living.

One of the things you will quickly find out about the Forsyth County real estate market is how many exceptional subdivisions there are.

If you’re in the market to buy real estate in Forsyth County, GA or thinking about relocating, you’ll find an excellent selection of housing options, many of which are nestled around world class golf courses. Established residential neighborhoods abound with lush mature landscapes, with new construction opportunities available in the southern and western quadrants.  Upscale or moderately priced, homes can be found conveniently located near award winning schools and shopping centers. In addition, those who are attracted to resort living may find the cottages and luxury homes around Lake Lanier an excellent choice.

For many years, Forsyth County has been one of the fastest growing areas in the United States in terms of percentage of growth. This growth is believed to be a result of the county’s proximity to Atlanta via GA-400 expressway and its appeal as a commuter area for people working in the Atlanta area. In 2008, the influx of high earning professionals increased the average income to a point where Forbes.com named it as the 13th wealthiest county in the United States in terms of median household income.

While Forsyth County residents find themselves able to commute to metro Atlanta’s numerous occupational, educational and cultural opportunities, they have been able retain a favorable blend of a convenient, upscale suburban living experience nestled in a semi-rural environment.

Sawnee Mountain Preserve - Hiking Trails in-Forsyth County GeorgiaRECREATION:

In addition, the Cumming Fairgrounds hosts many events throughout the year including a rodeo, the always popular Cumming Country Fair, as well as the annual Master Gardener plant sale and a farmers’ market.

My Woodland Park Clients Were Featured in the AJC

My Cumming GA Homebuyers Were Featured in the AJC
My Clients Purchased this Woodland Park Home for sale in cumming GAI loved opening up the AJC Homefinder section this week and seeing my buyers featured there!
This was a fun couple to work with as they were transferring in from North Carolina and not at all familiar with our area. The first step was to find out what was important to them as this area provides everything from new construction (smaller lots and fewer trees… but BRAND NEW!) to mature neighborhoods with large lots tons of trees but homes that might require a bit of updating.
I sent over a huge list of properties that ran the gambit and allowed them to openly critique each one. This allowed me to learn their preferences so I could target neighborhoods and then specific homes with their needs in mind.  It was evident, right away, that we would be looking in more mature neighborhoods as a larger, private lot was a “must have”.
As they were coming in from out of town to search for their new home (and traveling with an 8 week old baby), we knew that we had a very short timeframe in which to look so we narrowed the properties down to a manageable twelve to view.
Just before they arrived, a home hit the market that I knew would be perfect so I threw that one in too.  And… you guessed it!  It was the one they loved! READ MORE>>>

Starting a Small Business in Forsyth County GA? Visit the Small Business Services Center

The Small Business Services Center, which is co-located with the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce, says that last year was a busy year for them as they provided assistance to over 400 current and prospective local merchants.  One new business owner received relocation assistance which involved the Center providing information about suitable business locations and referrals to local professionals who could help make the transition from her current out of area location to Forsyth County easier.

In addition to business relocation services, the center provides a free on-line “small business tool kit” which supplies prospective business owners with step-by-step instructions for what they need to do to start up a new business.  The Center recently provided start-up assistance to five new businesses which initiated in the planning stages and ran through implementation and business opening.

The center’s director, Jason Mock, stated in a Forsyth News article that last year seemed to be a big year for start-ups, as many workers found themselves laid off or with less work hours than in previous years, but that, in addition, many existing businesses were considering moving into the Cumming-Forsyth County because of the low taxes and high per capita income the area offers.

One goal for the Center is to provide more educational opportunities for existing merchants throughout the year. In addition, they hope to see an expansion of the existing “lunch and learn” seminar program which is held in partnership with area universities and technical colleges.

Small businesses account for the largest percentage of Cumming-Forsyth County businesses: 4,645 of Forsyth County businesses employee 1 to 10 employees and 95% of local businesses have between 1 and 25 employees.

With those figures in mind, Mock still feels that there is plenty of opportunity for small business owners and those thinking about starting a new business in the area.  In fact, the Center is hoping for an increase of 33% in the local small business population in the coming year.

I hope we see it!
